Google acquires video software company Anvato

Google has acquired Anvato, the developer of a video software platform, to shore up its cloud offering in the area of video delivery.

Anvato’s Media Content Platform, used by many large media and entertainment companies including NBCUniversal, Univision and Fox Sports, will complement the efforts of Google Cloud Platform to offer scalable media processing and workflows in the cloud, Belwadi Srikanth, senior product manager for Google Cloud Platform, wrote in a blog post.

The Mountain View, California, company offers software that automates the encoding, editing, publishing and secure distribution of video content across a variety of platforms.

Ford invests $182.2 million in cloud-based software company

Ford is quickly becoming a mobility company driven by big data, not just cars and trucks.

Ford Motor Company announced Thursday morning that it has invested $ 182.2 million in a cloud-based software company called Pivotal. The move further solidifies Ford’s plans to be not just an automaker but also a mobility company that banks on big data.

“Our investment in Pivotal will help strengthen our ability to deliver these customer experiences at the speed of Silicon Valley,” said Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO, “including continually expanding FordPass – our digital, physical and personal mobility experience platform.” Read more…

Amazon offers company building as free shelter for Seattle’s homeless

Amazon is repurposing a building purchased for its downtown Seattle campus as temporary housing for the city’s burgeoning homeless population, Amazon real estate director John Schoettler said in a statement Thursday

The nearly 35,000 square-foot building will house about 200 residents and was formerly a Travelodge hotel and college dormitory, the Seattle Times reported

Rooms in the shelter will be reserved for families with children, as well as their pets. Residents will only be allowed to stay in the shelter at night, but can store possessions in their rooms while at Mary’s Place’s day shelters, the nonprofit said on its Facebook page. Read more…

Report: BMW X3 diesel emissions exceed EU regulations, company stock falls

The reverberation of the Volkswagen tailpipe emissions scandal is still being felt across the industry, pulling other brands under the harsh light of scrutiny.

According to a report out from Germany’s Auto Bild, the Nitrous Oxide (NOx) tailpipe emissions of BMW’s X3 diesel compact crossover exceed European regulations. In fact, the car’s respiratory-harming NOx emissions exceeded future Euro 6 emissions levels — set to go into effect in 2017 — by as much as 11 times.

The report is based upon tests performed in October, 2014, by the International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT), the independent nonprofit focused on clean energy that originally discovered VW’s emissions cheating. Read more…
